Common Questions From Families Just Like You
At The Cognition Crew – A School Psychology Collaborative, we understand that navigating your child’s learning needs can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to provide clear, comprehensive, and compassionate evaluations that help families make informed decisions. We focus on insight—not advocacy—so you can better understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and the supports that can help them thrive at school and beyond.
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that looks at how a student learns. It includes testing of cognitive abilities, academic skills, and related areas such as memory, attention, and processing. The goal is to better understand a child’s learning profile and identify strengths and challenges.
A private evaluation is conducted independently from your child’s school district. It typically offers more flexible scheduling, faster turnaround, and individualized recommendations. Unlike a school evaluation, it does not determine special education eligibility, but it can provide valuable information that families and schools can use for educational planning.
All evaluations are completed by certified and experienced school psychologists—the same professionals who conduct evaluations in public schools. Our team has 12+ years of experience assessing students across grade levels and learning needs.
Our role is to provide objective, high-quality assessments and clear communication, not advocacy. We do not attend meetings to represent families or schools. However, we will provide a written report and can do an optional consultation session to help you understand the results and how to share them effectively with your child’s school.
We provide evaluations for students in preschool through high school. If you’re unsure whether your child is the right age for a certain type of assessment, we’re happy to guide you.
We evaluate a wide range of learning and attention concerns, such as:
Reading, writing, or math difficulties
Attention, focus, or executive functioning challenges
Memory or processing speed concerns
Academic underachievement or giftedness questions
Learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia
Emotional challenges like anxiety or depression
Social difficulties like Autism
The full process typically takes 2–4 weeks from start to finish, including testing sessions, scoring and interpretation, and a detailed written report. We will discuss the timeline at your intake appointment so you know exactly what to expect.
While each school district has its own policies, most schools value independent evaluations conducted by certified school psychologists. Our reports are written in language that educators and special education teams can easily understand and use for planning.
We are a private-pay service and do not bill insurance directly. Fees vary depending on the type and scope of the evaluation. We will provide a clear cost estimate before you commit to services and can give you documentation to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
